After my first pregnancy ended abruptly in a miscarriage, I felt deserted by my care providers and isolated by my heartache. The hospital where I was being treated felt cold and impersonal. I was desperate to connect with someone who could provide unwavering, unbiased emotional support during my recovery and see me through my next pregnancy and birth. One of my colleagues recommended I hire a doula, and so I began my research.
I had goosebumps while reading about a doula's purpose in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum; not only because I knew I wanted one for myself, but because the job description made my heart sing. I quit my job, trained as a birth doula, and began my certification process the following month.
I was fortunate to be hired by my doula trainer to work in her hospital doula program. In my fourteen months of service, I worked with nurses, midwives, laborists, and private OBGYNs to ensure every family giving birth in the hospital felt supported and respected in their birth space. I attended unmedicated births, epidural births, spontaneous labor, inductions, and planned and unplanned Cesarean births: guiding each family with encouraging affirmations and a reassuring touch. When it was my turn to give birth, I chose to meet my daughter through a beautiful, midwife-supported induction.
Today, my passion continues to be providing unwavering support to families choosing to birth in hospitals and birth centers. It is my belief that with thorough preparation, a supportive care team, and an experienced doula as a guide, a positive and rewarding birth experience can be achieved.
Validation. Respect. Choice. As an experienced doula who has attended over thirty births, I can confidently say that these three pillars are the foundation of my doula services. I rely on my training, education, and passion for creating positive, safe, and empowering birth experiences to become the best possible support person for you and your partner during your hospital birth. I pride myself on my ability to handle the ambiguity that comes with birthing in a hospital setting. I have no agenda of my own, my goal is simply to support you. However you choose to birth, I will be there to educate and encourage you every step of the way.
